Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
