Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

At first glance, this album could seem more like a challenging university quiz than the latest pop record by a musician who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop icon. Split across 4 different sections and performed in thirteen languages, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work that delves into feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily change, frequently by way of the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars skyward here, supported by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of other artists seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to fuse historical sounds with the present, its stakes feel much higher on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that really raises this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, the listener nevertheless want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite understand—or even want to know—what you will go next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally different place than where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a featherlight symphony before collapsing into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style begins out moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux is navigating the gap of radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that it has become her first release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated by a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where other big pop albums of the year felt like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
