Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report early analysis suggest the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior political figure stated the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
